Before joining WMU-Cooley's faculty, Professor Scott was in general trial practice near Kalamazoo, Michigan, specializing in family, criminal, property, and bankruptcy litigation. He was appointed to the WMU-Cooley faculty in 1978 and retired from his faculty position in 2018.
He is a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America; the Real Property, Local Government, Litigation and Legal Education sections of the American Bar Association; the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; the State Bar of Michigan; and the WMU-Cooley Legal Authors Society.
He administered WMU-Cooley's Trial Workshop program for 10 years and coached WMU-Cooley's teams in the ABA, ATLA, and NACDL National Trial Competitions for law students. Professor Scott has been the national co-chair (with Professor Gerald MacDonald) of the NACDL Criminal Trial Competition. They co-author the case-file problems used in that competition every year.
His book, Evidence Illustrated, was published in 2000. He taught Evidence and Property.
