“Each of us has our own individual learning ecosystem – as do the organizations that we work for. As all of us are required to be lifelong learners these days, we need to consistently and intentionally enhance those learning ecosystems.”

I began my own Learning Ecosystems blog back in January of 2010, and still author that blog today. It’s become one of the top learning-related blogs within the global e-learning industry. To help enhance Cooley’s learning ecosystem I provide instructional design-related services and deliverables as well as technical support, consulting services, and system administration duties. I also develop documentation and other learning-related materials and experiences regarding Canvas, Cisco Webex, Canvas Studio, Panopto, as well as other tools. I assist others in the development of learning spaces as well as the implementation of a variety of teaching pedagogies and help in their knowledge of creating accessible learning materials. I am a member of several internal, cross-disciplinary committees and regularly post to internal communication channels regarding learning and legal-related items.

On the blog and in my work at WMU-Cooley, I have a strong focus on educational and emerging technologies. I keep my eyes on the horizon and consider myself a futurist. I pulse-check a variety of landscapes in my work. Along these lines, there exists a great need for the legal realm to catch up with the technological realm. I’m thinking here of such emerging technologies as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR) and Virtual Reality (VR), The Internet of Things (IoT), and/or the Internet of Everything (IoE), Natural Language Processing (NLP) and voice-driven interfaces, and others. I also received a Web Design & Production Certificate at San Francisco State University’s Multimedia Studies Program and a Computer Studies Certificate at Northwestern University’s School of Continuing Studies.

I joined WMU-Cooley in 2018 when I spent a great deal of my time and energy helping the Law School move to the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) and to Cisco Webex’ suite of communication tools. Prior to joining Cooley, I worked for Calvin College (now Calvin University) for 10 years. I co-launched an online learning pilot, developed the first active learning spaces on campus, piloted telepresence robots, headed up the Teaching & Learning Digital Studio, and supported faculty members from inside a Teaching and Learning Group. I was also an Adjunct Faculty Member myself, teaching at Calvin for over six years. Before working for Calvin, I worked for Davenport University Online, where I bridged the academic and technological sides of the organization. I took our courses to the next level by creating, obtaining, and integrating multimedia-based learning materials into our courses. Prior to my days working with the world of higher education, I worked within the corporate world – at Baxter Healthcare, Kraft Foods, and Wells Fargo.
