WHAT CLASSES DO
I TAKE?
First year students who are taking their first required courses
usually have large classes. Once students get into their
electives, classes will become smaller. These are taught
by both full-time and adjunct faculty.
Adjunct faculty are
working in their field of practice and are experts. They
will usually teach one to two courses per term. Many students
ask, "Don’t
I pick my own classes?", to which the answer is, "no...not
really."
You have your schedule options, however, to meet
all your required courses you will need to follow a curriculum
schedule for the first two years that will fulfill those
requirements. Cooley has two years of required courses,
and the curriculum is designed to cover everything that
you will need to know to pass the bar exam. Once you get
to your electives, you will have many choices, whether
you decide to choose a concentration or not. Cooley also
offers courses at their Oakland
University location in
Rochester, Michigan and the Cooley
Law Center in
downtown Grand Rapids.
MAKE SURE YOU ...
- Attend all classes and that you’re on time - Very important
- Follow the rules - To help prepare students for their
professional careers, Cooley has rules regarding attendance,
so make sure you follow them
- Attend Q&A sessions - Most first year class professors
will conduct question and answer periods before or after
classes
- Get to know your professors - Professors also are very
accessible and more than willing to meet with you if
you need to talk to them
- Accept that it is ultimately your responsibility to
succeed in law school - You define your goals and how
you will achieve them
