- Other colleagues were James Campbell, Benjamin Graves, and Isaac Christiancy
- In March 1887, President Grover Cleveland appointed Cooley as first commissioner of the Interstate Commerce Commision
- Was the one of the very first faculty members of the University
of Michigan Law School when it opened in 1859
