Cooley holds its first class in Lansing, Michigan

Members of the second class - The James Campbell Class - are admitted as full-time students in September of 1973.

Brennan takes the Campbell Class on a "field trip" to the new library. They unpack and shelve nearly 10,000 volumes in one day.

Deans at Wayne State and the University of Michigan try unsuccessfully to get the Michigan Supreme Court to oppose the creation of Cooley Law School. The Detroit Free Press undertakes a campaign to discredit Cooley and Justice Brennan.

Pauline Brennan, wife of Justice Brennan, opens the school's office on the second floor of the building at 507 S. Grand. Her desk is a card table. Over 200 apply for 75 seats in the inaugural class.

On the evening of January 11, the first class of Cooley Law School is assembled. Jutice Brennan, Stanley Beattie, and Lt. Governor James Brickley address the class. Board secretary Louis A. Smith calls the roll.

On the evening of January 12, 1973, Professor John W. Fitzgerald conducts the first class session, teaching property to the 76 entering students of the Thomas M. Cooley Class.

In August of 1973, Justice Brennan announces that he will resign form the Court in January to become the first Dean of the law school.

Professors Donald P, Ubell, Joseph D. Reid, George V. Warren, Wesley P. Hackett, Jr., Robert Mason, Lee C. Dramis, Robert E. Krinock, and Peter M. Kempel are hired as instructors.
