Tax Experts To Discuss How To Recognize
When A Client Has Criminal Exposure
The Thomas M. Cooley Law School Graduate Tax Program is co-sponsoring an expert panel discussion entitled "If Your Client’s a Criminal: Recognizing When a Tax Client Has Criminal Exposure." The event will be held Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus, 2630 Featherstone Road. A networking reception will begin at 5 p.m. and the panel discussion will be held from 6:20 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The panel will discuss why it’s important for accounting, legal and other professionals to recognize when a tax client has criminal exposure, and explain:
* The method the IRS uses to refer cases for criminal prosecution
* Indicators the IRS use to select criminal cases
* Cues a tax practitioner should recognize as a case that is in the criminal referral process
* Privilege issues
The experts also will offer advice for successful interaction with IRS administrators, legal consultants and other IRS personnel

Cooley Law School, the Oakland University School of Business Administration’s Center for Integrated Business Research and Education (CIBRE) and the State Bar of Michigan Taxation Section are co-sponsoring the event as part of the CIBRE Continuing Professional Education Week, which begins Tuesday, June 2 and offers seminar sessions on a range of topics available for certified public accountant continuing education credits.
