Misty M. Davis, a staff attorney for Cooley Law School’s Access to Justice Clinic, received the first annual Advocate of Justice award from the Carter-Alexander Institute, a West Michigan nonprofit organization that encourages community members to seek justice for disadvantaged individuals.
“I accept this award with much gratitude,” Davis said during her acceptance speech at the Carter-Alexander Institute’s 2008 Fall Community Justice Forum on Oct. 22. “I will look to it each day as my inspiration to never, never give up helping those in need.”
Each year, the Institute chooses an area on which to focus its efforts in seeking justice for others. In 2008, the Institute focused on the welfare of Michigan children, and chose Davis for the award because of her work as prosecutor on a variety of child abuse, child neglect and juvenile delinquency cases, both in Montcalm and Barry counties.
According to the Institute, Davis’ “…dedication, commitment and passion to protect children is an inspiration and a challenge to a community and a system that are often apathetic about the welfare of vulnerable children.”
Davis now works with Cooley students in the Access to Justice Clinic providing free legal service to disadvantaged individuals in the Grand Rapids community.
Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, Cooley Law School is the largest law school in the country. Founded in 1972, it operates J.D. programs across Michigan in downtown Lansing, Auburn Hills and downtown Grand Rapids. Today, Cooley Law School has more than 12,000 graduates across the nation and worldwide and also offers joint degree and master of laws programs. Cooley offers enrollment three times a year; in January, May and September. Additional information about Cooley can be found at www.cooley.edu.
