Cooley Professor Elected to CAL Executive Committee
Cooley Law School Associate Professor Evelyn Tombers, of Howell, Mich., has been elected to a two-year term on the Council of Appellate Lawyers' (CAL) Executive Committee. CAL is part of the American Bar Association's Judicial Conference, and it is the first and only national appellate bench-bar organization in the country.
Founded in 2000, CAL’s mission is to foster dialogue among federal and state appellate lawyers and judges that will improve appellate advocacy and strengthen ties among the numerous federal, state, and local appellate bar associations. Often working with the Appellate Judge’s Education Institute (AJEI), CAL sponsors and develops continuing legal education programs taught by the country’s most celebrated appellate judges and practitioners.
Professor Tombers is Vice-Chair of Cooley's Practice, Advocacy, and Litigation Skills Department. Before joining Cooley's full-time faculty, she served as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Patricia J. Boyle, Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. She was an appellate lawyer for 10 years, and she has served as Chair of the State Bar of Michigan’s Appellate Practice Section (2001-2002) and the State Bar of Michigan’s Children’s Law Section (2006-2007).
She has been teaching at Cooley since 1999, first as an Adjunct Professor. She has taught Research and Writing, Advanced Research and Writing, Scholarly Writing, Advanced Appellate Techniques, Moot Court, and Pretrial Skills. She is the faculty adviser to Cooley's moot court program and has coached many national moot court teams during her seven years at Cooley.
Founded in 1972, Cooley Law School is now the largest law school in the country. Cooley has three campuses across Michigan, in Lansing, Grand Rapids, and at Oakland University in Rochester. In addition to the J.D. program, students at Cooley can also pursue an LL.M. in Tax or in Intellectual Property.
