Lansing, Michigan — Laura (Warren) Garlinghouse, a second-term student at Cooley Law School, has been announced the winner of the State Bar of Michigan Law Student’s Section 1L Oral Advocacy Competition. Laura, of East Jordan, Mich., won a 25 percent BarBri scholarship for her victory.
Laura, along with other Cooley students, competed against students from MSU Detroit College of Law, Ave Maria,
Wayne State University, University of Detroit Mercy, and the University of Toledo. Students were given bench briefs for both appellant and appellee on an eminent domain case, and had about five days to organize those into oral arguments. Each student had to argue both sides of the case.
Laura is a 2001 graduate of Concord Academy Boyne, in Boyne City, Mich., and of Ohio University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in communications in 2005. She is married to Nicholas Garlinghouse, who is also a student at Cooley. She is the daughter of Robert and Karen Donaldson, formerly of East Jordan, Mich., and now of Winter Haven, Fla.
This is the second year of the competition and the second time a Cooley student won top honors. Cooley hosted the competition in its first year.
