Cooley Students Awarded at Michigan State Bar Annual Tax Conference
June 22, 2012 – Cooley Law School recently participated in the State Bar of Michigan's 25th Annual Tax Conference, presented by Taxation Section of the Bar and co-sponsored by Cooley.
Eight Cooley students attended on a scholarship provided by the State Bar.
Two students, Stephen John Baird and Jakob John Wojtkowicz, were chosen by the school's Tax faculty as "Outstanding Tax Students" from Cooley to receive awards at the conference luncheon. Students were selected by Cooley's tax faculty to receive the award from the State Bar of Michigan Taxation Section for "excellence in the study of taxation." Baird attends class at Cooley's Ann Arbor campus, while Wojtkowicz attends class at Cooley's Auburn Hills campus.
In addition, Stephanie Teitsma, who earned her J.D. at Cooley in May 2011 and is pursuing her LL.M. in Tax at Cooley, received an award for being published in the Michigan Tax Lawyer during the last year.
The conference, administered by the Institute for Continuing Legal Education, provided a day-long look at current tax issues, including development and trends in local, state, and federal tax; the Michigan Corporate Income Tax, master tax planning in connection with troubled real estate, cross-border transactions, unclaimed property rules, employee benefits in mergers and acquisitions, and more. Participants also were able to hear from the National Taxpayer Advocate on how to address the most serious problems faced by taxpayers.
