Citizen-Lawyer-Soldier Welcomed Home from Iraq
Army Major Miles Gengler of Grand Blanc, Mich. was welcomed home and honored for his service in Iraq by Chief Justice Marilyn Kelly of the Michigan Supreme Court at the Auburn Hills campus of the Thomas M. Cooley Law School today. Last year, Justice Kelly helped Gengler, who was deployed to Iraq shortly after he graduated from Cooley and took the bar exam, to be sworn in to the State Bar of Michigan via a 6,300-mile videoconference between Michigan and Baghdad, Iraq. For the past year, Gengler has served as a briefing officer for senior military officials and visiting members of Congress.
Chief Justice Kelly, Gengler's family, Chief Judge Gerald E. Rosen of the Federal Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Michael McDaniel and Cooley Law School Associate
Dean John Nussbaumer welcomed Gengler home and honored him for his service at the ceremony. A framed American flag that was flown over
Baghdad on July 4, 2009 in honor of Cooley Law School's efforts on
Gengler's behalf was also unveiled at the event.
