Thomas M. Cooley Law School students Joshua Mikrut,Deanna Natoli, Aaron Porter, Rusudan Shervashidze and Simon So recently competed in the Midwest Super Regional of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Chicago on Feb. 12-15 at the Chicago-Kent College of Law. The Cooley team placed in the top eight of the 24 teams competing from law schools throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin. The team also won a Best Memorial Award for submitting the fourth best written briefs and pleadings, with Josh Mikrut taking third place for best oralist.
The competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. Each team prepares oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent portions of the case.
“I am very proud of Cooley’s Jessup moot court team,” said Cooley Professor David Finnegan, who coached the team with Professor Paul Carrier. “The Jessup competition always involves complex issues of international law. The team’s success this year is the result of months of hard work, research, preparation and practice. The students put their written and oral advocacy skills on display in Chicago.”
Now in its 50th year, the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the world’s largest moot court competition, with participants from over 500 law schools in more than 80 countries. The competition is organized by the International Law Students Association.
Deanna Natoli, Aaron Porter, Rusudan Shervashidze and Simon So attend classes at Cooley’s Lansing campus and Joshua Mikrut attends classes at Cooley’s Grand Rapids campus.
