How do I register?

Above, you should see Lexis's internet address. Once you have entered this address and have been directed to Lexis's law school homepage, add the address to your favorites for future reference.

Before you can use Lexis, you must register your ID. This must be done soon after you have received your password at orientation since Lexis invalidates unregistered passwords after a brief period of time. Don't wait until you need something urgent and find out your ID is no longer valid!

Click on the red hyperlink shown above which states "register your ID".  You should then be directed to the screen shown below:

Enter the password you received at orientation and click Next. Follow the instructions provided, enter the required data and agree to the terms of use. You will need to customize your Lexis password.  Use your Cooley email when registering.

How do I find citations & print?

Below, you are seeing Lexis's main introductory page. This should be the screen that you are automatically routed to when you sign on.

1. This is your law school Lexis starting point. This arrow demonstrates that the tab is selected by being highlighted in red.

2. Until your third term, you will only be able to retrieve documents when knowing the document's citation (i.e. 4 USC 71) This allows you to retrieve cases, statutes, articles and other relevant legal documents requested by your professor for class.

3. If you are unsure of your citation, Lexis offers an alphabetical list of citation formats.

Let's enter a citation:

1. In this case, we will conduct a citation search by entering the citation in the box and then clicking on Get or hitting <Enter>.

Below is an example of a search result:

We see that our search for 4 USC 71 returned 4 USCS 71 . This is Lexis's owned database and is an example of a parallel citation. In essence, the United States Code is published by the Government printing office while the United States Code Service is printed by Lexis.

1. Various document delivery options are available to you. You can email, print or download a document. If you choose to print, the blue hyperlink Print allows you to configure your print job and choose your printer as opposed to the Fast print icon.

2. Don't forget to sign off when you are done with your research.

I need some extra help.

If you are having any difficulties, you have a few options at your disposal.

1. You can request help by selecting either the Live Support button circled below which will provide you with Lexis's toll free support phone number or it allows you to enter into a chat with a Lexis representation. (See additional screen below for an example.) Additionally, there is a help link which gives you suggestions and provides a list of subject databases.

2. Lexis student representatives are often on duty in the computer lab to assist you with any of your questions.

3. The reference librarians may be contacted in person, by phone, email or by chat.
