    James Heos is an attorney with Church Wyble P.C., having received an award from the State of Michigan for his 30 years of outstanding service in December 2008. In addition to his work in the courtroom, he is an active member of the community. He has served in the parish council for Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox church, is a founding member of the Michigan Bar Foundation, is a member of the Ingham County Bar Association and Inns of the Court, and volunteers his time to judge moot court competitions.

    William Smith holds the position of Executive Vice President & General Counsel for Hurley Medical Center, and has also served as the Corporate Compliance Officer for over 10 of his years at Hurley Medical Center. He also continues the responsibility for the medical center's Safety, Risk Management and Internal Audit. He is a member of the American Society of Health Care Attorneys, the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management, the American Bar Association, the Genesee County Bar Association, the Thomas M. Cooley Law School Alumni Board, the Genesee County Boy Scouts, Mallory Scott VanDyne Bar Association, Michigan Society of Healthcare Risk Management, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the State Bar of Michigan, and is a life member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

    Judge Jamo worked in private practice for nearly 30 years before he was elected Ingham County Circuit Court Judge in November 2012. He was a respected litigator with diverse experience in the Circuit Courts and Federal Courts. He served as a Hearing Panel member for the Attorney Discipline Board and as a Trained Mediator appointed by fellow attorneys and the Ingham County Courts to facilitate settlement of pending cases. He also volunteered with the Resolution Services Center of Central Michigan. Judge Jamo is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan, Ingham County Bar Association, Michigan Defense Trial Counsel, Michigan Association for Justice, and the Fellows of the Michigan State Bar Foundation.

    Genesse County Prosecutor, Michigan

    David Leyton was elected Genesee County Prosecuting Attorney in 2004. He was re-elected to his second term in 2008 and again in 2012 to his third term. Before his service as Prosecutor, he served 12 years on the Flint Township Board of Trustees-three as Trustee and nine as Clerk. Mr. Leyton is the past President of the Prosecuting Attorney Association of Michigan, and the past President of the Genesee County Bar Association. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Weiss Advocacy Center, a member of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, of Michigan, and serves as a Michigan High School Athletic Association football official.

    Judge Lowe has served the 35th District Court since January of 1995. Before his election to the bench he was in general practice and served as the City Attorney for the City of Plymouth. In his early years on the bench, he was very involved in a number of programs, including the drafting and implementation of the Domestic Violence program, Law Day outreach programs, and the pilot program for juvenile cases in district court. He continues to make an impact on his community Teen Court, an intern program for aspiring law students interested in the law, and teaching law school students about district court practice. He also presents programs on Abraham Lincoln which feature Judge Lowe himself as Abraham Lincoln.

  • Hon. Joseph J. Farah - County Circuit Court Judge

    Judge Farah was appointed to the Genesee County Circuit Court in March 1998 and was assigned to the Family Division handling domestic and juvenile cases until 2005. He currently works in the Civil/Criminal Division. From 1980- 1998, Judge Farah was in private practice specializing in appellate work, criminal law, and domestic relations. Judge Farah is a member of the Genesee County and Michigan Bar Associations, Centennial Inns of Court, and the West Flint Optimist Club. He is a past board member of the Michigan Judges Association, Cooley Law School, Metro Community Development, and Michigan Board of Law Examiners. Judge Farah also wrote and directed a short film entitled, "Jury Duty: It Isn't Fair If You're Not There", which is distributed statewide.

    County Court Judge, 11th Judicial Circuit, Miami-Dade County, Florida

    Judge Denaro was appointed to the County Court bench, 11th Judicial Circuit, Miami-Dade County, Florida, by Florida governor, Rick Scott, in May 2011. Judge Denaro presides in the Criminal Division. Before her judicial appointment, she was an assistant state attorney with the Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s Office, specializing in homicide, juvenile, and domestic crimes. Over the course of her 18-year career with the State Attorney’s Office, she supervised hundreds of young attorneys, provided insight on thousands of cases, and tried more than 100 circuit court cases. From 2004-2011 she was consistently featured as one of Florida’s top government attorneys in South Florida’s Legal Guide. Judge Denaro is a member of The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami, Heidi Hewes Women’s Cancer Association and numerous other civic organizations.

    Catherine M. Reynolds is senior vice president and general counsel of CMS Energy and Consumers Energy. She was elected to these positions in 2013 and is responsible for the legal department and all legal matters affecting the company. She also has overall responsibility for the corporate secretary activities, investor services and corporate records functions. She previously was vice president, deputy general counsel and corporate secretary. She joined the company in 1979 and transferred to the legal department after earning her Cooley law degree in 1983. She worked as a trial lawyer for 10 years and then focused on marketing, electronic commerce and corporate issues.

    Judge Hogan has served on the bench in St. Louis since 2005, and has presided over civil, criminal, domestic, juvenile and drug court dockets. During that time, she has served on several committees in the Circuit and was appointed by the Missouri Supreme Court to serve on the civic education committee. Before being named as an Associate Circuit Judge, she worked in private practice, for the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office and the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, and as the supervising attorney for Voices for Children, now known as CASA. She has been a leader in her parish and with the Girl Scouts, as well as with several other civic organizations in St. Louis.

    The Hon. Vonda Evans has presided over legal cases for the citizens of Detroit and surrounding Wayne County for well over a decade. Before her career on the Bench, Judge Evans was a Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor serving in the Criminal and Family Divisions. Having started her legal career at the young age of 25, the Detroit native gets a tremendous sense of accomplishment and satisfaction helping her people learn how to deal with difficult situations effectively. She also was the last judge elected to the Recorder’s Court bench, where she was the youngest judge on the bench to be elected at that time. Her extensive experience in the law, coupled with her personal experiences and no nonsense, common sense approach to resolving legal issues, has earned her a reputation for effectively communicating with dozens of litigants that appear before her weekly.

    Dr. Keith Pretty is the President and Chief Executive Officer for Northwood University, a global higher education institution that specializes in managerial and entrepreneurial education. He joined Northwood in 2006 after serving as President for Walsh College for seven years. Before Walsh, he was vice president for external affairs, general counsel at Western Michigan University and President and CEO of the Western Michigan University Foundation. He has combined his experience in higher education, the private sector and government service into a career of significant accomplishments in each of those areas. This led former Michigan Governor John Engler to appoint Pretty to design a state Department of Career Development that matched Michigan’s educational resources to its business needs.

Major Jonker previously served in Germany, The Netherlands and Uzbekistan.

    NHL Head Coach, Tampa Bay Lightning

    Jon Cooper is the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League. Before then, he was hired by the Tampa Bay Lightning organization in 2010 to coach the Norfolk Admirals, the Lightning’s AHL affiliate. During the 2011-12 season, the Admirals won the Calder Cup as the AHL's champions. Cooper won the 2012 Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL’s most outstanding head coach. For the 2012-13 season, Cooper became the head coach of the Syracuse Crunch, and led the team to a 39–18–3–5 record, the best in the AHL at the time of his promotion. Cooper closed his law practice in 2003 to focus on his coaching career.

As his mother remembers, her son Shaun always walked the straight path and never did anything that might keep him from his dream. Steadfast, after he graduated from Cooley, he worked as a public defender in Aiken, South Carolina, and then as a prosecutor in Charleston. With that experience, and realizing a desire to defend the rights of people, he became a partner in the law firm of Coffey, Chandler, Kent and McKenzie in Manning, and, just two years later was able to start his own firm.

She now holds the position of Chief Communications Officer for the Big Ten Conference and leads all conference marketing and communications efforts, working to integrate the Big Ten brand and messaging with institutional and Big Ten Network endeavors. The 12-team collegiate athletic conference is made up of some of the largest universities in the Midwest and was the first collegiate conference with its own television network, making it a perfect fit for the former Comcast senior vice president and All-American basketball player.

He served for nearly 23 years as a District and Circuit Judge in Michigan. Recognizing that the fair administration of justice and the rule of law are fundamental pillars of every democratic society, Fields then served for 2 1/2 years as an International Judge handling war crimes and genocide cases in the post-conflict countries of Kosovo and Bosnia.

    Col. Rodney Williams was recently saluted for over 28 years of service to our Nation in the Armed Forces. His service began in 1984. During his career he has held many positions including Assistant Staff Judge Advocate for the 177th Military Police Brigade, Deputy Staff Judge Advocate at 127th Wing, and Commander of the largest Mission Support Group in the nation. In 2010, he was chosen to serve as Director of the Michigan National Guard Human Resource Office. Still serving his Nation as a civilian, Col. Williams now works as Program Manager for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, National Center for Patient Safety.

And for more than 20 years, Judge Smolenski has earned a reputation as a distinguished judge among her peers, and a strong leader in her community, having spent countless hours as a legal advocate, contributor and activist.
