Information available as of December 08, 2004. The Thomas M. Cooley Law School is pleased to announce its sixth annual American Bar Association (ABA) approved Foreign Study Program in Toronto, Canada, for the summer of 2005. Law students will study and live in Toronto for six weeks beginning May 16 and ending June 25, 2005. This program is offered in cooperation with the University of St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto. Eight international and comparative law courses will be taught by Canadian and U.S. law professors, barristers, and judges.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

U.S. law students with an interest in comparative and international law will benefit from this program. Because Canada and the U.S. form the largest bilateral trading relationship in the world, spending time in Canada and gaining familiarity with the Canadian legal system will be helpful to most future lawyers. Canadian nationals attending a U.S. law school may enjoy earning credit in Canada. Finally, anyone interested in a summer foreign study program in one of the world’s great cities, without a language barrier and without the need to fly across an ocean, should consider attending the Toronto program.

DATES OF PROGRAM

The program begins Monday, May 16, 2005, and concludes on Saturday, June 25, 2005. All classes are held Monday through Friday, allowing students to visit many of the interesting attractions in the Ontario, including Lake Ontario, Niagara Falls, the Stratford Festival and The Shaw Festival.

LOCATION

Toronto is the capital of the province of Ontario and is the largest city in Canada. It is vibrant, with more than eighty ethnic communities from around the world. It is dynamic, with professional sports teams and a major financial district. It is cultural, with the third largest English speaking theater district in the world and outstanding museums like the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Proof of citizenship with photo ID is required for U.S. citizens entering Canada. A Visa is not required for a stay up to 180 days. Anyone with a criminal record (including a DWI charge) should contact the Canadian Embassy or nearest consulate. Any student who is a citizen of another country should contact the Canadian Embassy, 501 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20001, Telephone: (202) 682-1740 for further entry information.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ST. MICHAEL'S COLLEGE

St. Michael’s is located on the eastern edge of the University of Toronto’s campus. St. Michael’s is just a short walk from the shopping and theatre amenities along Bloor and Yonge Streets in the heart of uptown Toronto. Over three thousand full-time and one thousand part-time students are enrolled at St. Michael’s. Most of the major city attractions are just minutes away by taxi or public transportation. To see and learn more about the college, go to www.utoronto.ca/stmikes.

HOUSING

Accommodations are available for all students at Sorbara Residence Hall. All rooms are singles, with sinks, and are air-conditioned. Restrooms are available on each floor. A room at Sorbara will cost approximately $950US for a six-week stay ($185C/week). The college can add a small refrigerator to your room, at a reasonable charge, for the entire six-week stay. Once you have been accepted for the program, you may arrange for housing directly with St. Michael’s College. Students may also reside off campus.

INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

The St. Michael’s campus is modern and classrooms are generally accessible for students with disabilities. Any persons with special requirements should discuss them with Associate Dean Weiner before registering.

TRANSPORATION

Students will be responsible for their own transportation to and from Toronto.

PARKING

Parking is available at the College. The rate is $60 (Canadian) per week. Commercial parking is also available in the area.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Visits to legal institutions in Toronto will be scheduled throughout the two sessions. Although no academic credit will be given for these visits, they will provide an important enrichment to the educational experience and students will be expected to accompany the professors and their classmates on these excursions. Last year, the group attended a session of the Ontario Parliament at "question time," had a guided tour of the criminal courts, and were invited to a catered lecture at the University Club. In a more social vein, the group went to The Stratford Festival, watched a Blue Jays baseball game, rode the coasters at Canada's Wonderland, and were guests at an opening barbecue and a closing formal dinner at St. Michael's. Similar events will take place in 2005.
