DIRECTORS AND FACULTY

Justice Todd Archibald has been a Superior Court Justice since 1999. He received his LL.B. from the University of Toronto Law School and earned an LL.M. from Osgoode Hall Law School. He has been an instructor at Toronto and currently is an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall. He is a co-editor of Carswell’s National Annual Review of Civil Litigation. A former litigation partner with Borden & Elliot, Justice Archibald teamed with James Morton in teaching Canadian Evidence Law in 2003-04. This summer he joins James Morton again in teaching Comparative Criminal Law.

Jonathan Black-Branch is a member of the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford. He has taught in the University of Oklahoma's summer law program in Oxford. He has an LL.B. from Oxford Brookes University, both an M.A. and a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford, and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He is a Barrister-at-Law in both Northern Ireland and England. We are delighted to have him join our program this summer.

James David Flagal serves as Counsel in the Ministry of Environment and Energy in the Province of Ontario. He received B.A. and Masters of Environmental Studies degrees from York University. He also holds LL.B. and LL.M. degrees from Osgoode Hall Law School. He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, where he teaches a Public Law Bar Admission course. Both he and Laura Nemchin taught Canadian Environmental Law in 2000 and Canadian Administrative Law in 2001, 2002, and 2004.

James C. Morton holds a B.SC. from the University of Western Ontario, an LL.B from Osgoode Hall Law School, and an LL.M. from the Universtiy of Leicester. He is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Specialist in Civil Litigation and is a litigation partner with Steinberg, Morton and Frymer. He recently co-authored Ontario Superior Court Practice--2001 (CCH, 2000), A Guide to Costs in Ontario (CCH, 2002), Essential Estate Administration Ontario (CCH, 2002), and Written Advocacy (Butterworths, 2000). He is a lecturer in evidence at Osgoode Hall and lectures for the Law Society of Upper Canada in civil procedure, insolvency, legal ethics, negotiation, and advocacy. He taught Canadian Evidence Law in 2001. In the summer of 2002 he served as co-director and taught Canadian Constitutional Law. In 2003 and 2004 he taught Canadian Evidence Law and Canadian Criminal Law.

Laura Nemchin serves as Counsel in the Ministry of Environment and Energy in the Province of Ontario. She received a B.A. (Honours) from The University of Toronto and has taken additional work toward a Masters Degree in Literary Criticism and Semiotics. She earned LL.B. and LL.M. degrees from Osgoode Hall Law School. Ms. Nemchin is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and is a lecturer in the Department of Environmental Studies at The University of Toronto. In the fall semester of 2003, she was a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School. She and James Flagal taught Canadian Environmental Law in 2000 and Canadian Administrative Law in 2001, 2002 and 2004.

Marilyn L. Pilkington is a long-time member of the Faculty of Law at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. She served as Dean of the Law School from 1993-98. She has earned a B.A. from the University of Alberta, an LL.B. from the University of Toronto, and an LL.D. (Hon.) from the Law Society of Upper Canada. She serves on dispute resolution panels under Chapter 19 of NAFTA.

John S. Brennan will be the Cooley director of the 2005 program and will teach “Torts & Terrorism.” He earned an A.B. from the University of Detroit and a J.D. at Boston College Law School. He has served as the school’s vice president for Information Technology. He currently chairs the Property Department and coaches our ATLA Trial Competition Team.

William P. Weiner has overseen Cooley’s foreign study programs for more than 20 years, and has directed and taught in study-abroad programs in France, England, Germany, Ireland, and Canada. He received a B.A. from Kalamazoo College, M.A. and a J.D. degree from the University of Michigan. He holds an LL.M. degree in international law from Cambridge University. Professor Weiner taught Comparative Constitutional Law in the Toronto 2000 program.
