Academic CriteriaTHE ACADEMIC PROGRAMThe Cooley Foreign Study Program in Toronto has been approved by the Accreditation Committee of the ABA Section on Legal Education. No classes have prerequisites. Each course is conducted in English by a law professor or Canadian attorney and meets the requirements of the ABA. Most faculty members for the Toronto 2005 Program have an LL.M or other advanced degree in addition to an LL.B or J.D. degree. CLASSESThere will be two three-week sessions. Students may attend either or both. Four timely law courses will be offered in each session, providing an excellent variety of options. Students may enroll for no more than three courses per session. Final exams will be offered on a Saturday at the end of each session. ACADEMIC PREPAREDNESS POLICYEach student at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School bears the responsibility to prepare and understand the material assigned and to recite in class when called upon. If circumstances arise which prevent the student from being prepared, it is the responsibility of the student to notify the professor before class. Each professor may establish a specific preparedness policy for each course. GRADESEvaluation of students in each course will be through final examination. Students from other law schools will be registering for these courses as guest students, and credit for these classes will be presented on an official Thomas M. Cooley Law School transcript. It is the responsibility of guest students to contact their law school to determine the transfer of credits back to their law school. Guest students should also consult with their school to determine grading requirements. At the Thomas M. Cooley Law School, in most courses, grades are based on written final examinations, administered and graded under a system that assures student anonymity. Professors adhere to established grade definitions. Within that framework, each professor may score the examinations differently and create a separate grading scale for each course. Grades at Cooley are known for being hard-earned and truly indicative of a student's grasp of the subject matter. Cooley Law School does not practice grade inflation. STUDENT ATTENDANCE POLICYCooley Law School determines a maximum number of allowable hours of absence by multiplying the number of credit hours for a course by two (e.g. a one-credit class has a maximum of two hours of absence). There are no pre-excused absences in any class. Students should keep their own records of their absences and the reasons for each absence. STANDARD SCHEDULE OF CLASSESLIBRARY RESOURCESThe John M. Kelly Library at St. Michael’s is available during the program. Students will also have access to the University of Toronto’s Robarts Library and the Bora Laskin Law Library. Also, a common room in Sorbara Hall will be available as a study area.
