Before joining Cooley's faculty, Professor MacDonald was with the Washington, D.C., offices of Sidley & Austin and Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, where he worked primarily on commercial litigation matters. His experience includes private sector litigation involving commercial contract, antitrust, regulated industries, and employment issues as well as representation of the FDIC and RTC in litigation related to failed savings and loan institutions.
In law school, Professor MacDonald taught first-year research, advocacy, and writing courses and was a member of the trial team that went to the finals of the ABA National Trial Competition. He is a member of the Order of the Coif, a recipient of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Art and Science of Advocacy, and is listed in Who's Who in American Law. He is published in the area of civil procedure and has served on national committees responsible for drafting discovery reform policies.
Professor MacDonald serves as co-director (with Professor John Scott) of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers' Cathy Bennett National Invitational Trial Advocacy Competition held each year in conjunction with the fall meeting of NACDL.
Professor MacDonald is a member of the state bars of the 07/13/2005 and has been admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States.
Professor MacDonald teaches Civil Procedure, Advanced Trial Workshop, and a U.S. Supreme Court seminar.
