The Thomas Cooley Law School joins Professor Hilligan's many friends in mourning her death on February 20, 2008. Marion M. Hilligan was Associate Dean of Cooley's Grand Rapids campus. She also taught Research and Writing.
Dean Hilligan began at Cooley as an adjunct professor, teaching Introduction to Law and Scholarly Writing I and II before joining the full-time faculty as a Visiting Professor in 1993.She supervised Introduction to Law and Scholarly Writing and was the faculty adviser for the Law Review.
As a Cooley student, Dean Hilligan was an Honors Scholar. She was a member of the Cooley Law Review Board of Editors, serving as the Casenotes and Comments Editor.
Dean Hilligan was active in local government in Portland, Michigan. She was a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Commission before serving on the Portland City Council for eight years, the last four as mayor of the city. She was also a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Portland Community Arts Council Board of Directors.
As a tribute to Dean Hilligan, the entering class in January 2009 will be named the Marion M. Hilligan Class.
