Professor Hicks served as general counsel for Thomas M. Cooley Law School from 1991–2002. In 1996, he began teaching Civil Procedure. He joined the school’s faculty full-time in 2002 and is now an Associate Professor of Law.

Before coming to Cooley, Professor Hicks was in private practice in the Chicago office of Seyfarth Shaw and the New Haven, Conn., office of Wiggin & Dana. Professor Hicks represented both business and nonprofit clients, including hospitals and health care institutions, and private schools, colleges, and universities, concentrating his practice in litigation and employment law.

He is a frequent speaker before continuing legal education, business and higher education audiences on labor and employment law matters, litigation avoidance and preparation and the law of higher education. His publications have addressed labor and employment law and litigation matters and disability accommodation and discrimination.

At Washington and Lee, he was a Martin P. Burks scholar and the student director and instructor for the first-year legal research, writing, and advocacy courses. He captained the national moot court team and won the school’s moot court competition and oral advocacy award.

Professor Hicks teaches Civil Procedure and Property and has taught the school’s pretrial litigation course.
