Prior to entering the legal profession, Professor Cotter worked as a naval architect and marine engineer in Newport News, Virginia.

After being admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1976, he engaged in the general practice of law as a sole practitioner. He later developed a specialty in products liability cases involving watercraft.

Professor Cotter has published articles in the areas of partnership, conflicts of law, civil procedure, and land use, and is a member of the Cooley Legal Authors Society. He served as reporter for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan Local Court Rules Revision Committee from 1988 to 1991. He has received a variety of awards for teaching excellence.

Professor Cotter teaches Civil Procedure.
