Professor Cavanaugh joined the Thomas Cooley staff in 1995 as a clinical supervisor and teacher at the Sixty Plus, Inc., Elderlaw Clinic, and taught Criminal Law Clinic. He served as an Adjunct Professor in Lawyering Before Trial and Trial Advocacy 1989-1992. He became a full-time professor at Cooley in 1995.

In private practice, Professor Cavanaugh was a general practitioner in Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1978-1995, focusing on the areas of criminal defense, family law litigation, business planning, and commercial and residential real estate. Before entering the profession of law, he served as a math and science teacher for Livonia Public Schools, then as a math teacher for Ann Arbor Public Schools.

Professor Cavanaugh teaches as part of the Sixty Plus Inc., Elderlaw Clinic faculty. He also teaches Wills/Estates/Trusts and supervises several student externships and the Washtenaw County Public Defender Clinic.

In 2003, Professor Cavanaugh taught Equity and Remedies in Melbourne, Australia as Australian Study Program Director. He will teach the class again in 2006 in the Study Abroad Program's Christchurch, New Zealand location. Professor Cavanaugh is also faculty adviser for the Thomas M. Cooley Journal of Practical and Clinical Law. He was a co-winner of the Beattie Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004.
