Professor Butler's legal experience began in private practice in Indianapolis, where she was an associate attorney responsible for the defense of tort actions.

After returning to her home town of Bloomington, Ill., she represented plaintiffs in personal injury actions and handled employment discrimination claims, general civil litigation, and appeals. During that time, Professor Butler was also an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois College of Law.

Before joining Thomas Cooley, Professor Butler was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Illinois, where she taught torts, advanced torts, and products liability.

Professor Butler is a founding member of the Thomas M. Cooley Inn of Court. She was the articles editor for the University of Illinois Law Review and is a member of the Order of the Coif. She teaches Torts I and II.
