Before joining the Thomas Cooley faculty, Professor Brennan worked in both private practice and in a governmental capacity. He practiced in the areas of product liability and tort litigation in Minnesota, trying cases at both the state and federal level. He worked with employment, commercial and securities fraud litigation while in private practice in Chicago.

For four years, he served as an assistant united states attorney for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago, Ill. He had responsibility for a variety of civil cases, including a $46 million hospital bankruptcy matter, commercial and employment disputes, forfeiture, habeas and medical malpractice cases. He conducted jury trials in fraud cases for the criminal division on a volunteer basis as the docket permitted.

He served as the vice president for Information Technology at Cooley from 2000-2002.

Professor Brennan is the chair of the Property Department and teaches Property, Civil Procedure, Torts, and Equity and Remedies. He also coaches the school's ATLA Trial Competition Team.

Professor Brennan is a member of The Order of the Coif. He serves on the board of directors of the Dispute Resolution Center of Central Michigan, and was an articles editor for the Boston College Law Review.
