FREQUENTLY ASKED FOCIS/STAR QUESTIONS What is FOCIS and what does it stand for?FOCIS is an acronym which stands for Fall On-Campus Interview Season. It is the period every fall when on-campus interviews, resume collections and special career programs are scheduled. When does FOCIS start?FOCIS runs from September through November. However, some application materials are due to employers prior to the official start of FOCIS. Who can participate in FOCIS?Second and third year students can participate in on-campus interviews, resume collections and direct submissions. First year students can attend programs but cannot participate in the recruitment activities until after November 1. Is FOCIS the only way to find a job?FOCIS is only one part of the job search process. Not all law firms do their recruiting during the fall. Typically, only large firms that can predict their hiring needs in advance participate in fall recruiting activities. Small and medium-sized firms tend to hire new attorneys as needed. Students who do not find a job through FOCIS activities can use the information available to learn more about legal employers and begin a focused job search. Can students use FOCIS interviews to practice their interviewing skills?FOCIS interviews ARE NOT practice interviews. Hiring attorneys do not want to interview students who have no interest in working at that firm. If a student wants to practice interviewing skills, the Career Services staff can arrange a mock interview. Where can students get help with their resumes and cover letters? The Career Services Office offers help with resumes and cover letters. Drop-in hours are usually scheduled early in the term for a quick resume or cover letter review. For dates and times, check the fall program schedule.
