Russian Judges Visit Grand Rapids Campus

Members of a Russian judicial delegation visited the Grand Rapids Campus on July 25, here posing with Hon. Gordon J. Quist, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan (3rd from left in back row) as well as Cooley Associate Professor Chris Hastings (second from right) and Associate Dean Nelson Miller (far right).
Professor Chris Hastings demonstrates the Socratic method for a panel of visiting Russian judges who were interested in the teaching methods used in American law schools.

Six Russian judges from the Republic of Tuva (in Siberia) visited the Grand Rapids campus on Friday, July 25, as part of the Open World Program, sponsored by the Open World Leadership Center. The judges spoke to an audience of Cooley faculty, students, and staff, answering questions about the Russian judicial system, the law school experience in Russia, and legal principles. They also requested a demonstration of the Socratic method and observed as Prof. Chris Hastings put the students through their paces.

Hon. Gordon J. Quist, District Judge, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan, acted as moderator for the event and also for the discussion following a luncheon. The event was co-sponsored by the Western District of Michigan Federal Bar Association, the Grand Rapids Bar Association, the student Federal Bar Association, and the student International Law Society.
