Nine Cooley/GR faculty and staff volunteered to help with a service project as part of United Way's 15th annual Day of Caring event on September 11, 2007.
The volunteers wiped down mattresses and bed rails and made beds at the Guiding Light Mission in the Heartside neighborhood of Grand Rapids, just a few blocks from the Cooley campus.
Cooley volunteers included Prof. Tracey Brame, Prof. Brad Charles, Prof. Heather Garretson, Librarian Kori Kasara, Prof. John Marks, Assistant Dean Nelson Miller, Prof. Mike Molitor, Deputy Director Joan Rosema-David, and Administrative Assistant Tracie LaHuis.
Day of Caring, sponsored by the Heart of West Michigan United Way, is the largest volunteer event in Grand Rapids. More than 1,600 volunteers from 48 businesses and organizations performed 121 service projects for 71 nonprofit agencies on the 2007 Day of Caring. It is estimated that more than $90,000 in labor and material costs are given to the community through the Day of Caring event, which includes about 4,100 hours of service.
