GR Campus Celebrates Law Day

Cooley Associate Professor Paul Sorensen, President, Grand Rapids Bar Association, prepares to award pins to attorneys who have practiced law for 50 years during the 2007 GR Law Day on May 1. Kristin Vanden Berg (seated), U.S. District Court, moderated a discussion panel concerning young people and the law.

Cooley's GR Campus co-sponsored a Law Day luncheon with the Grand Rapids Bar Association on May 1 at the Peninsular Club in downtown Grand Rapids. Associate Dean Marion Hilligan welcomed the 120 guests and updated them on news and events at Cooley.

Associate Professor Paul Sorensen, the President of the Grand Rapids Bar Association, introduced the speakers and awarded pins to members of the bar who had practiced law for over 50 years. Juan Salazar, a paralegal with Legal Aid of Western Michigan, was awarded the 2007 Liberty Bell Award for his efforts representing impoverished clients in front of federal judges in Supplemental Security Income hearings.

The theme of Law Day 2007 was Liberty Under Law: Empowering Youth, Assuring Democracy. The Law Day program included a panel discussion that focused on young people and the legal system, including Teen Court and Mock Trial programs in the Grand Rapids Public Schools.
