March 30, 2007 Sports Agents Visit GR Campus
On March 30, Kevin Poston and Mark Miller spoke at Cooley as part of a program sponsored by the GR Sports & Entertainment Law Society and provided an interesting contrast as to representing professional athletes. Mark Miller graduated from Cooley just two years ago. He represents 25 hockey players, most of whom play in a minor league. Kevin Poston, President and CEO of Professional Sports Planning, is one of the top agents in the country and represents huge NFL and NBA stars. Both attorneys emphasized the same thing, though -- starting a new business is not easy and requires a great deal of hard work and the ability to overcome repeated failures. "Patience is a must, along with tough skin, because you're going to have to deal with rejection...," Poston said. "...personal skills are important in this business. You can be the smartest guy in the world, but if you can't talk to someone, it's not going to work. Can you talk to the top athletes and will they listen?" Following the presentation in the GR Law Center, students, faculty, and alums retired to McFadden's Restaurant for a mixer and reception.
