September 7, 2006 Cooley Faculty and Staff Volunteer for Day of Caring
For the third year in a row, Cooley faculty, staff, and administrators in Grand Rapids participated in the West Michigan United Way Day of Caring on September 7, 2006. The Day of Caring brings agencies and corporate volunteers together to work on local service projects. This year, Cooley volunteers were assigned to the Guiding Light Mission and God's Kitchen in the Heartside neighborhood just a few blocks from the law school. One team of volunteers composed of Professors Tracey Brame and Dale Iverson, Librarian Ruth Stevens, and Enrollment and Student Services Coordinator Dave Dee spent the morning at the Guiding Light Mission, where they cleaned out materials in storage and folded bedding in the dormitory.
The second team composed of Assistant Dean Nelson Miller, Professors Tracey Brame and Mike Molitor, and Librarians Kori Kasara and Aletha Honsowitz worked at God’s Kitchen, a local soup kitchen on Division Avenue. They prepared salad, carried boxes of food, washed dishes, and served dinner to 200+ members of the community. Several other Cooley faculty and staff members contributed funds for a large turkey and ham and a donation check for God's Kitchen. Last year, nearly 1400 volunteers from 36 companies participated in Day of Caring in the Grand Rapids area. They completed 80 projects resulting in 4,100 donated hours of service, a savings of $70,000 in labor and material costs for the Grand Rapids community. |
