TheThomas M. Cooley Law Library in Grand Rapids, in conjunction with other Notable Book Sponsors, hosted Professor Thomas Noer, speaking on his book Soapy: A Biography of G. Mennen Williams, on June 21, 2006. A reception in the library followed. Professor Noer is the Valor Distinguished Professor of Humanities at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Michigan Notable Books is an annual program with roots stretching back to Michigan Week 1991. Started in 1954, Michigan Week is a one-of-a-kind festival geared to pay tribute and draw attention to the people, places and things that make the Great Lakes State so unique. In that sense, the Michigan Notable Books list hits the mark. Every year, the Library of Michigan chooses 20 of the previous year’s best books either written by a Michigan resident or about Michigan or the Great Lakes. Each title – whether non-fiction or fiction – speaks to Michigan's rich cultural heritage.

Sponsors of the 2006 Michigan Notable Books program include the Michigan Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Cooley Law School, ProQuest, LaSalle Bank, the Library of Michigan, the Library of Michigan Foundation, Michigan Center for the Book, and Schuler Books & Music.
