John Dean speaks at Cooley EventJohn Dean, a former counsel to President Nixon who was the star witness in congressional hearings on the Watergate cover-up, spoke at an event sponsored by Cooley Law School and the ACLU on Saturday, June 10, at the Ladies Literary Club in Grand Rapids. Mr. Dean said the Bush White House is more obsessed with keeping secrets than his former boss, Richard Nixon, and is using terrorism as an excuse to expand presidential powers. "The issue of state secrets is a relatively old concept," Dean said, "but it has been used dramatically under the Bush presidency." ACLU lawyers were scheduled to make oral arguments in a Detroit court on June 19 in a suit filed over the Bush administration's wiretapping of telelphone calls without court approval.
