GR International Law Society Hosts Film Showing

Cooley Law Student Melanie Croft introduces the film "Invisible Children" at a showing sponsored by the GR International Law Society.

Cooley's GR International Law Society hosted a showing of the film "Invisible Children: Rough Cut" on March 18 at the Cooley Law Center in downtown Grand Rapids. This documentary describes the kidnapping of Sudanese children in Uganda and their conscription as armed fighters, slave laborers, and prostitutes. Students served a selection of Middle African (primarily Ethiopian) foods before the film showing and raised $300 for the education of these children.

The film describes how every night in Northern Uganda, children flee their homes and walk for miles to seek shelter in the city for fear that if they remain home they will become one of the abducted. They sleep in bus parks and hospitals by the thousands. Their homes are no longer safe, and these shelters within the city are their only hope for survival. This is an everyday reality for the children referred to as “night commuters."

In 2003, three young Americans traveled to Northern Uganda and filmed “Invisible Children." Their documentary focuses on the plight of these night commuters with the hope of bringing awareness and inspiring others to help.
