Cooley Holds Ribbon-cutting Ceremony for New GR Library

A crowd of 120 people gathered in the new GR library, Wednesday, June 23, to celebrate its completion and to witness the official ribbon-cutting. Associate Dean Lynn Branham served as the emcee for the ribbon-cutting program which featured George Heartwell, the mayor of Grand Rapids. Mayor Heartwell spoke of the value of a law library to the entire community and commended Cooley for its commitment to work toward the common goal of educational excellence for the entire city.

"Today, we celebrate not only the opening of a library but the revitalization of a neighborhood and our entire city,” Heartwell said.

Other speakers included John Wheeler, CEO of Rockford Companies which developed and built Cooley’s new building at 111 Commerce as part of the Cherry Street Landing Project.

Don LeDuc, President and Dean of Cooley, expressed his delight with the growth of the GR Campus and said, “You can do nothing better to ensure growth in your community than putting in a library."

Additionally, Duane Strojny, Associate Dean for Library and Instructional Support, welcomed visitors to the new library and described its significance by saying, “A library is the heart of a law school.”

Following the ceremony, tours were conducted of the library as well as of the second and third floor offices and classrooms.
