GR Campus Hosts Chili Cookoff Fundraiser
The Grand Rapids campus celebrated Martin Luther King Jr./Equal Access to Justice Day on January 16 with almost 40 people attending a fundraiser event featuring a chili cook-off competition, speakers, and readings, all for the benefit of the Legal Assistance Center. In a close contest, Grand Rapids student Jaime Maclangs representing the GR Student Bar Association Volunteer Committee won the chili cook-off. The executive director of the Legal Assistance Center, Kristin Hanratty, then described how the Center contributes to access to justice consistent with Martin Luther King's dream. Grand Rapids students Rob Kurtycz, Jaime Maclangs, and LeeAnn Ford each gave inspiring talks on the meaning and value of volunteer service. Students, faculty, and staff participated in reading twelve selections from Martin Luther King's Letter from Birmingham Jail. The event showed that moral exemplars like Dr. King, Ms. Hanratty, and Cooley student volunteers share the common quality of having combined their moral and ethical understanding with their self-conception resulting in meaningful action on behalf of others.
