GR Campus Honors Outstanding Adult LearnerJohn Zevalking, a 2nd-year Cooley law student on the GR Campus, was awarded the GRAHEN Outstanding Adult Learner Award for 2005. Every year, GRAHEN (Grand Rapids Higher Education Network) recognizes adult students from 14 colleges and universities in the Grand Rapids area who have displayed excellence in academic and workplace achievement, community service, and leadership. John was chosen by a committee of Cooley faculty and staff from a field of five nominees. He is the top-ranked student in his class with a 4.0 GPA, and recently won the first-year moot court competition receiving "Best Advocate" honors. He does this while remaining active in the lives of his two sons, Mitchell, 19, and Ryan, 15, and working 40 hours a week at the Frederik Meijer Gardens where he trains and oversees some 100 volunteers. John serves as a volunteer aide giving free legal counsel to Heartside residents at Degage Ministries. Additionally, he has volunteered for a congressional campaign, spearheaded a benefit for a local musician with M-S, and acted on stage with the Heritage Theater Company at Spectrum Theater. "John is a true Renaissance man," said CJ Kruska, GR Campus Director and GRAHEN secretary. "He is most deserving of this honor, and he represents the best of Cooley Law School." Other Cooley students nominated for the award included Kristin Britt, Pat Gelderloos, Joann Kline, and Michael Lichterman.
