Internships at Cooley
Sixy Plus, Inc. Elderlaw Clinic
Law student interns of the Sixty Plus,
Inc., Elderlaw Clinic serve the legal needs of senior citizens in
the Lansing area. Certified to practice under Michigan court rules,
students represent senior citizens before administrative appeal boards
and in probate, circuit, and district courts. Under the supervision
of faculty members, students interview, counsel, negotiate for, and
represent clients who otherwise might not have access to legal representation.
Participating students enroll for two
terms and work the equivalent of 90 billable hours each term. Students
attend classes, maintain office hours, conduct court hearings, discovery
and negotiation, and meet in supervisory sessions each week.
Sixty Plus, Inc., Elderlaw Clinic offers
a broad range of civil legal services, including preparation of wills,
powers of attorney, guardianships and conservatorships, and consumer,
real property and other civil matters. Students also represent clients
in public benefits cases.
Sixty Plus has been serving the community
and Cooley Law School students for over 20 years. It is one of the
most established clinical programs in the country and has been recognized
as a leader in the clinical legal education.
As
one student said of her experience, "I
made a positive difference in the lives of my clients. One couple
came to the clinic feeling distraught and nervous. My supervising
attorney and I were able to find a solution to their problem, and
I implemented the solution. They were truly grateful for the help
we provided. What my clients don't know, they made a big difference
in my life as well. Because of them, I proved to myself I am a
lawyer."
